6 Types Of Ophthalmic Instruments Used In Cataract Surgery by Jessie Flesner
Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure of the eye in the world. Specialized ophthalmic instruments and modern technology make it possible to restore one's sight after surgery. This "common" procedure is nothing short of miraculous for many patients.
Cataracts are cloudy spots which can develop on the eye's crystalline lens. The crystalline lens is the part of the eye that is partially responsible for refracting light that's focused on the retina. The crystalline lens is transparent so that light is able to pass through.
Cataracts can obscure part or the entire lens. Cataracts are opaque. Light cannot pass through these cloudy spots.
The degree to which these spots affect vision depends on the size of the spot. Even a very small cataract inhibits the passage of light.
Of course, the larger the spot, the less vision a person will have. In severe cases, the spot may cover most of or the entire lens. The sufferer in this case would be considered legally blind.
The formation of cataracts is largely related to age. However, some forms can affect children. These types may be related to genetics and are typically treated differently.
Fortunately cataracts are relatively easy to treat. However, in second and third world countries, many people go blind from them. This is almost always due simply to lack of access to medical care or lack of technology and equipment.
Surgery to treat the problem involves removing the crystalline lens. An artificial intraocular lens is implanted in its place. The new lens acts just like the natural one.
A surgeon will use a number of different ophthalmic instruments to perform the procedure. Many of these ophthalmic instruments are remarkably simple. Six of the most commonly used ophthalmic instruments used include:
1) Ultrasonic emulsifier: This is a handheld ophthalmic instrument the surgeon uses to "emulsify" the lens material in the eye. It's a bit like scrambling an egg yolk and white together. Each part eventually becomes indistinguishable from the other. It's a thought that makes some people cringe. However, this is the safest, simplest and least invasive way to remove the lens.
2) Knife/scalpel: Numerous types of these exist. Sometimes these ophthalmic instruments are referred to by the nickname "chopper." They may be used along with the ultrasonic emulsifier to aid in the break up of lens material.
3) Cannula: These ophthalmic instruments may also be considered as laparoscopic instruments and more. This is because cannulas are used in a variety of other medical procedures. It is a very thin tube that can be inserted into the eye area.
It can be used in two major ways. It can be used like a garden hose, with water being pushed through it. This helps to irrigate the surgery site and wash away debris.
It can also be used in the reverse, like a vacuum cleaner. In this case, it is able to suck up any debris in and around the eye. It may be used to remove the emulsified lens matter.
4) Speculum: These ophthalmic instruments are used to hold the eyelids open during a procedure. They come in varying sizes and styles in order to fit a variety of patients.
5) Scissors: These are more than ophthalmic instruments. They're used in all kinds of different procedures and applications in health care.
Surgical scissors come in different sizes, styles and blade configurations. They may be used during cataract surgery to cut delicate tissue.
6) Curette: Like some of the other tools listed, the curette has applications across the medical field. Curettes are spoon-shaped scrapers. The ones used as ophthalmic instruments in eye surgery are small and fine. They may be used to help the surgeon remove the emulsified lens matter or debris.
