I adopted a Chihuahua and was told he was 6yrs old how can I really tell his age?
We adopted him from the SPCA and I think they lied to us. The vet is unable to give us a definite but compared to my other chihuahua he is so lazy and incredibly nonactive. He has a sandy colored coat so I can't spot gray hair and his teeth are missing and worn. Will I ever know how old he is?
You won't ever know his age. The vet can give you an educated guess, but that's the best that you can get. The SPCA did not 'lie' to you- they use either the information given by the owners who surrendered the dog, or, in the case of strays, their vet estimates the dog's age. You would be surprised, too, at how far off an age estimate can be. They use the general condition and color of the teeth. My rescue dog, we know for certain was four when I adopted her (the previous owners turned her AKC registration over to the rescue). My vet said he would have estimated her age at 7 when I first adopted her. After two months of living with me, and proper dental care, he said he would have guessed her to be 3. So a lot depends on the care they got in their original home.
