In actual shooting situations, what you need is a filter that is multi-coated. I use Hoya filters on all my Nikon lenses .. The UV's I buy are around $35.00: Hoya 62 mm (623034), 72 mm (723031), 77 mm (773036)and my one 72 mm Polarizing Filter (016683) about $95.00

Polarizing filters are not useful on wide angle or telephoto lenses for enhancing the blue of the sky. I use the polarizing filter on my 24-85 mm and 18-200 mm, but don't expect much under the 24 mm setting or above about 100 mm except for reflections.

Since the UV or skylight filters are there to protect the front element of your expensive lens while you are shooting, spending $40 or $50 on a filter makes a lot more sense than having to send you lens into Nikon for them to repair the front element because someones big foot was jammed into it ... I kill two to three of my lens hoods each year when shooting sports and getting run over by some of the players from time to time, so depending upon a lightwieght lens shade to protect my lens is not rational.
