One of the main benefits of owning a digital SLR camera is the ability to utilize a wide variety of different lenses. Most professional photographers will tell you that the camera itself, as long as it has all basic D-SLR functionality and records images to the Memory Card in a high resolution file, is not as important as the lens (or glass) that you choose to use. There are several basic categories that lenses fall under. Understanding the categories is the first step towards knowing which lens is the right one for you.
Kit Lenses - Kit lenses are offered for purchase along with the Camera Body, but you will often have the option to purchase the camera body without the kits lens. These lenses provide very basic functionality for everyday shooting at an inexpensive price and are therefore a good choice for beginners.
Prime Lenses - Primes lenses offer only one focal length, which is a feature that's becoming less and less popular with D-SLR lenses. If you're doing specialized shooting, though, prime lenses are a very good option as they typically have wider apertures than other lenses.
Zoom (Telephoto) Lenses - Zoom lenses are easily the most popular lens choice because they allow for a lot of variation in the focal point of the photograph. A 70-300mm lens, for example, can be used in the 70-105mm range for portraits and other close up photographs, while the other end of the spectrum is useful for capturing images of wildlife and other objects that are located far away from the camera. Higher end zoom lenses handle both aspects very well, but although you gain in ease of functionality you do typically lose a bit of sharpness.
Wide Angle Lenses - Wide angle lenses are the preferred choice for landscape and architecture photographers. They allow for a much broader scope to be captured in a single image.

Wide angle fittings?
I'm keen to experiment with wide angle photography but would rather not spend too much money if I can help it (but will spend it if it garantees quality). I noticed a wide angle/fisheye/Macro Lens on ebay that is actually quite affordable (£34 + £10pp). how do these lens attachments compare to a dedicated wide angle lens?
they will give the effect of a wide angle / "fisheye" lens
however if its an add on / converter then...
the optical quality will almost certainly be reduced (the quality of the optic will not be as good as a dedicated lens
the light transmission may not be as good, meaning the f stop may need to be higher.
because they are and add on they may not have been treated with sufficient care.. ie there is a risk that it may have suffered from bad handling or storage.
if you camera uses auto metering / exposure and autofocus then it may cause problems... especially with the autofocus.. if you are happy with the manual focus of your camera then its probably OK.
but if you don't plan on being a professional photographer, or you are just dipping your toe in the water then it may be a good choice. Sometimes you need to see the capabilites of a lens, before you appreciate how it can help you as a photographer. Mind you if a local secondhand photo equipment dealer has a lens I've found they are sometimes prepared to let me borrow a lens to try it out (after paying a suitable deposit... sometimes its a 'sale or return' with no questions asked, sometimes its a smallish fee) but often they will let you play with a lens before deciding to buy.
