Absolutely, the Canon 40d is a good camera.

If you truly are "go big or go home", try the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III.
The 18-135 lens should be a good starter lens. My Nikkor 18-105 kit lens that came with the camera gives me all the shots I need while I'm learning. 18mm will do some wide angle while 135mm will do some telephoto.
