The poly layer in the middle flexes and holds the inner and outer layers of glass together so breakage is reduced and strength is added to the vehicle's roof. When an object hits the windshield it will cause a hole or split that runs to the inner glass layer. Even if the damage is small, the first thing that immediately contaminates the area that is broken is good old air, and it's that air that shows up as a dark gray mark within the windshield. Don't mistake this blemishing for water or dirt settling inside the injured area. The splinter in the glass layer can be so tight that moisture in any form could not penetrate the area.

What is the minimum thickness of the coating that will minimize the refletcion of light?

A material with an index of refraction of 1.18 is used to coat glass. The index of refraction of glass is 1.5.

This will apply to both questions.
Wavelength of 555 nm light in the coating = 555/N, N being the index of refraction of the coating. Use this wavelength in the following calculations.
You want a coating thickness that results in a 2-way light path that produces a phase reversal between the first- and second-surface reflections. But there's a catch here. When light reflects from the boundary of a transition from low N to high N, the reflection itself produces a phase reversal. So for the N=1.18 coating, there is a reflection phase reversal and the 2-way path must produce an integer number wavelengths phase shift, thus the smallest such thickness is 1/2 wavelength. For the N=1.67 coating there is no reflection phase reversal so the 2-way path must produce a phase reversal, thus the smallest such thickness is 1/4 wavelength.
