Swiss develop new nano-magnetic particles to clean the blood by double
Zurich, Switzerland, researchers are developing a nano-magnetic particles to look forward to spun off the potentially harmful ingredients from the blood. This technique may be used for the treatment of human poisoning, blood infections and certain cancers.
The works comprise carbon coated magnetic nanoparticles clothes, covered with their antibodies against specific molecules. The researchers think these elements, such as the protein which easily lead to inflammation: interleukin and some toxic metals, such as lead, removed from the blood. In the blood after adding nano-magnetic particles, and then let the blood in the dialysis machine and through the machine again, the researchers are able to filter out the unwanted components.
"Nano-magnetic particles can capture the target composition. The magnetic particles before getting into the recycling, should accumulate these magnetic particles of toxic substances with a magnetic separator into a repository, so that they are separated from the blood circulatory system." Inge Herrmann explained who is a chemical engineer of University of Zurich, now leading the study.
Pursuant to a February 2011 issue of "Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation" magazine published the results of the study, researchers can remove 75% of digoxin of a blood strainer, which is a heart medication, intake of high doses is life-threatening. After a half hour removal process, magnetic particles can be removed up to 90% of digoxin.
Of particular note, the researchers must prove magnetic particles on the human body itself is non-toxic and does not affect the blood's coagulation ability. Early findings were promising. Published in 2011, a paper on "Nanomedicine", Herman's team showed that the magnetic particles did not damage the cell, it would not increase the clotting ability. This is two critical milestones of the security. In October, the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting, Herman presented data show that a part of the magnetic particles be absorbed by two immune cells, monocytes and macrophages. This proves an important principle, any future application of the results can be used to treat serious infections.
Now, Herman and her colleagues are suffering from sepsis in mice to conduct a technical study. Sepsis is a severe blood infection, the combination of a large number of damaged immune cells are their signs. In the U.S., about 100 million people suffer from the disease. Jon Dobson is a biomedical engineer of University of Florida, he said detoxification is a "very interesting applications of "nanotechnology. His team is using magnetic nanoparticles as a remote control, to manipulate cell activity, such as stem cell differentiation. "Chemical method, once the process starts it is difficult to stop. With magnetic technology, you can control the stop switch of the heart."
The Swiss team developed the method, its potential use may be expanded to other diseases, septic field, including leukemia, Dobson said. For example, nano-magnetic particles can be designed to match and leukemia cells, and then guide them to be excreted, thereby reducing the risk of tumor metastasis.
O. Thompson Mefford is a nanotechnology expert of Clemson University. He said that this achievement was very attractive. He pointed out that the human body was a highly oxidizing environment, and iron oxide will weaken magnetic of materials. Swiss team gave the magnetic particles with a layer of carbon clothing, to prevent corrosion. But he still pointed out, the technology of survival remains to be seen. "Cycle for a long time, there is no immune response and no in groups between the magnetic particles, they are still real challenge."
