Leitz (Leica) has been well known for making some of the premier lenses for use on 35 mm cameras, but the number of lenses available makes them uneconomic for professionals to use. Leica cameras are mostly used by advanced amateurs who can afford the cost of owning a Leica system

Nikkor and Canon companies make lenses for both the entry level photographer (economic, less than $400) and high quality lenses like the Nikon ED and Canon L lenses. While these lenses are not inexpensive, they provide very high quality images for both professional and advanced amateur shooters. The number of available lenses in both the Nikon and Canon systems exceed 65.

Carl Zeiss makes lenses used by Hasselblad and some select cameras like Nikon and Canon. Sony has a license to make lenses using the Zeiss lens formulas, but to Sony specifications. Zeiss has been a good lens maker for decades and in many cases can perform as well or slightly better than the equivalent Nikon or Canon Lens

Pentax/Tokina lenses have always been good performers and the generic Tokina lenses are the best of all the generic lenses made.
